Thanks to spyware sucks and dynamoo for helping us catch some bad ads. Turns out that we were unknowingly hosting a campaign that was distributing malware - it has since been removed from our network. The problem with running third party ad tags, regardless of the advertiser, is that there is no control with what ads are actually being trafficked. An advertiser may bring a campaign advertising a strong brand that any publisher would want to run only to swap the banner to something malicious at a set time of the day.
